Image credit Netflix Ever since I was young, I have loved zombies. I grew up watching The Walking Dead, which is now in its final season. I played popular zombie video games such as Telltales The Walking Dead or The Last Of Us, which is receiving its own television show on HBO. I have seen and viewed some of the best zombie films to this date. And yet, the latest Netflix zombie show, All Of Us Are Dead, has taken the number one spot in my heart as one of the best modern zombie shows - possibly one of the best zombie TV shows I do love all the other shows like The Walking Dead which has been my main zombie show for years such as Z Nation, The Strain and more, All Of Us Are Dead has recently become my favorite zombie show. And right here, I’m going to convince you the reasons as to why you should watch this amazing series next, trying my best to avoid spoilers, as a seasoned zombie lover. Image credit NetflixAll Of Us Are Dead Jumps Right Into The Seriousness Of The Situation Something that I really like about All Of Us Are Dead is that it jumps right into the seriousness of the situation, unlike many other apocalypse shows or movies that build up the problem. Like for example - in The Walking Dead in the first episode, we do see Rick trying to escape hordes of zombies, but the focus of the episode isn’t really on the dead - it’s more on Rick trying to find his family. That’s fine and dandy, but if I’m watching a zombie show, I’m probably going to be watching it for the zombies and how the people survive in this situation. Some TV shows take a while to get to that point, but All Of Us Are Dead moves right into the seriousness of the situation from the first scene, and then shows how quickly one virus can spread if not contained. It almost feels like a car crash when the shit starts to hit the fan early on. You know it’s going to be bad, but you can’t help but look at the horrible things that are happening, from the first bite to the next, which is what captures your attention so quickly into the show. Image credit NetflixThe Story Is Contained Mainly To One Location In All Of Us Are DeadI have a feeling I’m going to be using The Walking Dead in comparison to a lot of my points here, because this is another big one. In All Of Us Are Dead, I love the fact that the story is contained to one area. In The Walking Dead, the story has expanded so much in Season 11, and while the addition of new storylines and new worlds and new characters can be a good thing, sometimes, it doesn’t always pan out and it complicates the story still not a big fan of the Reaper storyline in Season 11. However, All Of Us Are Dead does the complete opposite of that, instead focusing almost entirely on one location - Hyosan High School. I know what you’ll say - TWD didn’t do that in the beginning and was only focused in the quarry, and to that I say you’re right. That’s what made the show good in the first place, its focus on one particular area per season, further pushing the storyline and the characters into danger without adding unnecessary villains to the mix. But it’s lost that spark down the line with the inclusion of many different groups and many different communities that screw everything up. All Of Us Are Dead thrives on its almost sole location, being able to focus on the ways in which the students bond with each other, learn to survive, and the ingenious ways they use to kill zombies when no one else is there. It gives the actors and actresses their time to shine while you, as the viewer, connect with their characters. Image credit NetflixAll Of Us Are Dead Is NOT Afraid To Kill Anyone - And That’s A Good Thing This was one of my favorite parts of All Of Us Are Dead. This Netflix series is not afraid to kill anyone. I won’t reveal who dies in this show, but let me just say I was getting serious flashbacks to TV series’ like Game of Thrones or Breaking Bad, where important main characters are killed off, as if with the snap of a makes these deaths even bigger is that they aren’t mindless deaths that are just there for the gore, or for the sake of killing off a character that needed to die like Cersei’s stupid demise by bricks in Game of Thrones. Every person who dies in All Of Us Are Dead passes in their own different way, which further pushes the stories of the main characters in the show. These people who die could be a best friend, a teacher, a love interest, or anything else. There are some truly heartbreaking deaths here, but All Of Us Are Dead so willingly kills them off that I can appreciate each one for meaning something. It shows the reality of a zombie outbreak - most likely, the people you love are not going to survive, so you better cherish them now while they are still on the TV screen. Image credit NetflixThe Outside Story Featuring The Military And The City Survivors Is Just As Interesting This was another big thing that I loved about All Of Us Are Dead. While I was just talking about how great it was that the show almost completely focused on the high school students as its main story, All Of Us Are Dead also utilizes the whole city of Hyosan and the military near it to further show the outbreak outside of the school. And it’s done fantastically. In twelve episodes, we are given a truly brutal look at what it would be like to live in a highly populated area during a zombie outbreak. We see multiple stories that don’t overtake the main one within the high school, but are still just as interesting, and don’t over-complicate the also intriguing to see how the military and regular people adapt and change during a circumstance like this, and the heavy moral decisions they must make in order to save people. When that duality is shown, of no one really being good or evil in this situation, it feels a lot more realistic than most antagonist stories in zombie shows. All Of Us Are Dead reminded me a lot of Will Smith’s I Am Legend, in the way that no human is really the ultimate villain - the infection is. The virus is. And that’s what makes this such a great zombie show. Image credit NetflixThe Zombie Situation Evolves In A Way Many Other Zombie Shows Don'tI really don’t want to spoil too much here, so let me just say this - the zombies in this show are unlike anything you have ever seen before. Mild spoiler, but the people who are bitten turn quick in this show, almost World War Z levels of quick, which is what causes this epidemic to spread so easily. However, this show does something with its zombies that isn’t done quite common, creating an even more intriguing storyline that could potentially carry itself into another season, if ordered by I don’t want to reveal what exactly happens with these zombies because you should find out for yourself, but yeah, you should be afraid - very afraid. And boy, am I scared when watching this show. Just imagine a whole entire horde of zombies racing after you - God, I’m shaking just thinking about it. If zombies are your thing as much as it is mine, seriously, watch All Of Us Are Dead. It’s a fantastic series with a well-written plot that will capture your attention from the first scene, and has truly become one of my favorite pieces of modern zombie horror. You won’t regret it, trust All Of Us Are Dead on Netflix. opens in new tabNetflix truly knocked it out of the park with this series, and due to its popularity, I truly hope it gets renewed for a second season. Molded in the vein of undead horror/thrillers like Train to Busan, which is actually referenced by one of the characters, the latest small screen offering from South Korea follows a group of young students attempting to survive a zombie outbreak. Based on Joo Dong-geun's webtoon you can read it here, the television series — which is currently No. 3 on the subscription streaming platform — received a TV-MA rating for its brutal and violent imagery. Other South Korean hits were given the same audience designation, though All of Us Are Dead allegedly outpaced both of them due to its unflinching take on the zombie genre. “The series received the maturity rating of 18+ for about seven different reasons, which would be one to two more than Squid Game or Hellbound,” director Lee JQ told Soompi a website dedicated to reporting on Korean pop culture for English-speaking readers. "There are cruel and violent scenes, but we thought these would be necessary in order to stay true to the zombie genre." When it came to casting the protagonists, the filmmaker wanted to go with lesser-known actors to help the story feel grounded. “I thought that bringing on actors who were great at acting, but still unknown to the public, would add to the immersion of the series,” he explained. "If you watch the show, I believe that you’ll find yourself falling more and more in love with both the characters and the actors who play them. It’s a testament to the appeal that each character has." In terms of adapting the source material, he didn't want to "depart much from the original" comic, but went on to emphasize that some viewers "might get the feeling that the show is different from the original as far as the specific situations that happen to some of the kids as well as what each of the characters are like." All 10 episodes of All of Us Are Dead are now streaming on Netflix. The show currently holds a 76 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. “I truly can’t believe all the love it has received from so many countries around the world, I’m so thankful," JQ said of all the positive reactions. "I think this will come as a great relief to all the actors and staff who devoted themselves to this project for two years." 27 January 28, 2022March 23, 2022 All of Us Are Dead Episode 1 First Impressions by solstices Ruthless and relentlessly fast-paced, Netflix’s latest K-drama offering serves up a grisly apocalyptic outbreak with a side of teenage troubles. It won’t be long before the zombies overrun the school, but even amongst the humans, it’s clear that there are already monsters in their midst. That then raises the question — where does humanity end, and monstrosity begin? EPISODE 1 FIRST IMPRESSIONS The drama opens with a brutal bullying scene, which is the first peek we get at a zombie. The tormented victim turns out to be the son of the science teacher LEE BYUNG-CHAN Kim Byung-chul, who winds up bludgeoning his zombified son with a Bible. It’s certainly a jarring opener, and I wonder if it was just for shock value or if the show will expand on this religious motif. I certainly hope it’s the latter; I think it would be interesting to explore the fine line between faith and despair, salvation and destruction, and belief and obsession. Our outbreak’s patient zero is student KIM HYUN-JOO Jo Yi-seo, whose curiosity gets her bitten by a rabid white mouse in Byung-chan’s science laboratory. Upon finding out, Byung-chan ties her up in the laboratory’s storage room and subdues her with a sedative shot, though of course she ends up turning feral and escaping. But first, an introduction to our ensemble cast! LEE CHUNG-SAN Yoon Chan-young is immediately endearing in his embarrassment over the name of his mother’s fried chicken joint which she insists she named him after, not the other way around, and he’s joined by his chatty buddy HAN KYUNG-SOO Han Sung-min. They’re soon joined by NAM ON-JO Park Ji-hoo and her best friend YOON YI-SAK Kim Joo-ah, and all four friends trade gossip and lighthearted jabs over a meal of too-salty fried chicken. Chung-san and On-jo have such a fun dynamic, and they light up the screen with their banter. Since they live right next to each other, they’re best buddies, heading to school together and playing rock-paper-scissors to decide who has to be the other’s gopher for the day. On-jo doesn’t hesitate to dump her bag on him, ha. They’ve got each other’s backs, even if they try to cover it up with gruff bluster from Chung-san and well-aimed kicks from On-jo. On-jo is a likable and spunky heroine, and I love how relatable she is. She’s outspoken around her friends, but in front of Soo-hyuk Park Solomon she’s shyly preening, heh. She has an adorable puppy crush on Soo-hyuk, and I can see why — the guy oozes charm in spades! There’s a cute moment where she confesses to him by giving him her nametag, except it’s interrupted by Chung-san barging into the conversation to fuss over On-jo’s injured arm. His concern is written all over his face, aww. I don’t usually like love triangles, but these characters are all so innocently sincere in their affections that I don’t think I’ll mind it all that much. Plus, Soo-hyuk seems to have a little crush on the silent and studious class president CHOI NAM-RA Jo Yi-hyun! His bashful smile and awkward failed confession were so cute. As for the other students that were introduced in this episode, we only get a glimpse of them, but I’m already interested to find out more. LEE NA-YEON Lee Yumi displays an unexplained animosity towards Kyung-soo, and I’m curious to find out the reason why. Bespectacled student OH JOON-YOUNG Ahn Seung-kyun only has less than a minute of screentime, but there’s something about the look in his eyes that makes me wonder if there’s a secret he’s hiding. The high school setting isn’t used merely as a location, since the show also takes the time to spotlight the turbulent troubles of students at that age. That ranges from the frenzied rush to get to school on time, to the graver issue of school bullying. The main bully, YOON GWI-NAM Yoo In-soo, is nauseatingly repulsive in the extent of his torment. He’s downright vicious, and the bullying scenes were honestly difficult to watch. I felt sick to my stomach when he and his cronies forced MIN EUN-JI Oh Hye-soo to strip by tearing her clothes off her, and then strong-armed KIM CHUL-SOO Ahn Ji-ho into taking photos of her. The utter humiliation and the threat of having those photos circulated drives Eun-ji to the school’s rooftop, and it’s so chilling that what stops her from jumping isn’t the tearful pleading of Chul-soo, but the shattering of glass from the floors below as students are shoved through the windows and ravaged by zombies. That launches the zombie outbreak into full swing, and with hordes of students running around in mass panic, the adults can’t turn a blind eye. To the surprise of absolutely no one, the school principal selfishly prioritizes the school’s reputation over the students’ wellbeing. Our protagonists’ homeroom teacher Lee Sang-hee is the only one who cares, but her concerns are overridden by the hierarchy of authority. Luckily, she’d called the police earlier when she sent Hyun-joo to the hospital, effectively foiling the principal’s plan of a cover-up. Officer SONG JAE-IL Lee Kyu-hyung, yay! clearly has a history with Byung-chan, and there’s a charged tension between them that I’m itching for the drama to explore. I wonder what happened between them in the past, and if it explains why Byung-chan became the person he is now. Perhaps that might have been what set him on his downward spiral, and his son’s zombification was merely the catalyst that spurred his descent into instability. Honestly, this drama doesn’t give us anything new in terms of the school genre or the zombie genre, but it’s filmed captivatingly enough that I’m drawn into its world. It might just be my bias for practically half the cast that’s been introduced so far, HAHA, but I find the characters compelling and I’m invested in the story for their sakes. Most of the characters seem to fall into high school archetypes, though, so I wonder if I’d like them as much if I hadn’t previously seen and loved the actors in other dramas. Plus, the mini 365 Repeat The Year and Nobody Knows reunions had me so stoked! Although, I don’t know if it’s a compliment that I’m primarily watching for the actors and not for the story itself… I guess so far I’m pretty lukewarm about this show? The first episode was a decently fun watch, but it didn’t particularly stand out. Perhaps I was hoping for a show that would bring something new and fresh to the zombie genre, but this episode played out exactly the way I expected it would. That’s not to say that it was boring, though, because the execution was done well, so if the show keeps this up I think it could be a gripping tale. I do hope it subverts some expectations further down the line, since that would give it some dimension and ramp up the tension. It’s already demonstrated humans’ capacity for monstrosity before the zombies were even introduced to the school, so now that we have actual monsters in the mix, I’m looking forward to a nuanced examination of humanity, as well as just how far people can descend into depravity when pushed to the brink. Editor’s note Coverage will continue with a second comprehensive review, so please refrain from discussing any plot points beyond Episode 1 in this post, or any tidbits from the original webtoon. Register an account. it was ok. got a lot better after episode 40. the beginning had very short chapters and they were action scenes so a single scene got dragged out over several episodes. the author loved to also include several unnecessary panels of people's faces to show their gradual reaction during an action scene, which didn't help with the storytelling delivery and pace; the panelling choices weren't always the best. the episodes got a lot longer later on. episode 126 was the most well-written episode in this series. Don't listen to anyone here, don't pay attention to the low ratings and just read this webtoon, dammit. It's so good! Read straight to the end, because it's that good and it's worth it. I promise you, it's good and you'll like it. It's so emotional reading from start to finish. I have so many feelings right now. What a ride. Wow. This is reminding me of DEAD DAYS, which is another really good and realistic zombie suggest having access to all the chapters all at once so that you don't get bogged down by the daily pass silliness on LINE Webtoon. You see some people complaining about that here and yeah, it can be a pain. It worked for me though as I had to prepare myself mentally and emotionally before reading, so I hoard and read a bunch of em at that last panel on the last chapter.. that final reveal / ending. Ugh!... Last updated on February 24th, 2022, 154am I have always disliked how zombies is such a cliché trope in media, but I love how this story realistically showcases what would happen in this type of disaster event. I've read "My Daughter Is A Zombie", and this webtoon gives similar vibes in the portrayal of a zombie outbreak, but the difference is that that was mostly a comedy, and this one is more drama and realism and it's not at all way the characters survive and navigate through the 7 days is excruciating - this is what Kesaran's comment is complaining about, that the pacing is bad. But uh, try being stranded for even one day and see how slow time passes by when that happens. When isolated and in survival mode, time becomes does not become a not to dismiss the thought on the slow pacing yes, the kids did spend 90% of the story waiting or running around in the school, and the action scenes were so spread out that even one event could happen over several chapters. But the point of the "drag" is to draw out the emotions of what is happening and the direness of the situation. That is why this webtoon is realistic, because unlike other cliché zombie movies, this one REALLY focuses on the bond that the characters had and how hard it is to "kill" a zombified person. To a high school student, putting an end to someone's life is extremely unfathomable. Most people can't even butcher a live animal by themselves. I appreciate that the author illustrated and showed the psychological and emotional impact that the kids went through. Also, I think the fact that this is a daily pass series does not help with the pacing at all LOLI didn't quite care about the adult world, but it was important to look at what was happening to try and resolve the zombie outbreak. There wasn't the same level of emotional attachment to the adult characters compared to the students, but it was the high school that was the focus of the story, so that's character building is phenomenal, and I can't help but mourn over all the characters that died. No, that's not a spoiler, because death is to be expected in a zombie story 🤣. The art, too, is something that deserves praise. Those zombies are uglyyyyyyyy, and I mean that in a good way.
